Leaders in love with their... titles

They struggle to create a status for themselves, to reach a senior leadership role, with a considerable number of subordinates, just one or two reporting lines above them, with substantial empowerment, access to resources, a nice payment package, even a nameplate on their office door, an upper floor office, parking space and an imposing title on their business card.
Have you met them? They are supposed to be visionary leaders who will use their empowerment to build, to change, to develop, to challenge, to inspire, to motivate. But what do they do instead?
They fall in love with their status. They look in the mirror and they think they are great, they are irreplaceable, they know everything better than others. They behave like lions protecting their powers, sometimes even acting against their own customers or against the rules, because their decision-making ability is affected: they are in love!
Sometimes they avoid making decisions that would bring change; they prefer the status quo – this gives them control. Most of the time they are masters of office politics, they want more and more power, more resources, bigger budgets, more subordinates. Their principles and values are so flexible that whatever was important to them yesterday may no longer be valid today! Their alliances are temporary and they match their short term purpose. And, yes, they will “stab” you in the back without blinking an eye if that serves their personal objectives.
They will not grow leaders. They will grow submissive subordinates because they do not like to be challenged. They are like a big tree – nothing grows under their branches.
They are servile and flattering with their own bosses or with people who may have an influence on the object of their obsessive passion: their status.
