In a troubled international environment, with armed conflicts and health threats, the hospitality business has still managed to beat the odds, displaying a positive trend this year, JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel General Manager Igael Porecki told Business Arena. In an interview with our magazine, Igael Porecki tackled a wide range of subjects from current market challenges and business trends to employment issues and future modernization plans.
Based on your extensive experience in the hospitality business, what are the main positive aspects of doing business in Bucharest in this sector and what are the negative sides?
Year 2014 has turned out to be a good year for the hotel business, with positive trends both in accommodation and event organizing, despite the instability of the political climate in Europe, facts that have a negative impact on the industry in the area.

What are your expectations regarding this year’s turnover and what percentage is likely to be covered by the various lines of business (room rental, food and beverage, events)?
Year 2014 has proved to be a good year, actually, the best one in the last five - six years, since the beginning of the financial crisis.
We are a big hotel, with multiple and diverse Food & Beverage options: five restaurants and bars and a summer terrace and a flexible conference center, totaling around 2,000 sqm. This means that F&B brings in a fair share of the total revenue: about 45 per cent in the first three trimesters. Event organization (catering) represents around 50 per cent of the total Food & Beverage revenues.
